Austria
Salzburg was our first stop in Austria - the hills were alive! We stumbled across a street festival which kept us entertained for a few hours. The next night saw us in Wels staying with my relatives and being spoilt with a home-cooked meal, warm shower, cosy bed and a washing machine! A big thank you to Doris, Manfred and Marcel for looking after us all. From here, we picked a road on the map that looked like it would take us through the Alps in the right direction. The decision turned out to be a great one- we rode over Sölkpa Pass with hundreds of other bikes and worked our way down the other side into Mühlen where we found the perfect camp ground. We spent two nights here, one being in the local pub with Post Peter, a 70 year old retired Austrian postman who loved to sing! The next morning we hiked up to the top of Zirbitzkogel for an amazing panoramic view of the mountains from 2,396m. We set off nice and early to arrive in Bled, Slovenia by lunchtime but as fate would have it, that wasn't going to happen. A nail managed to find its way into Rob and Mills back tyre which stayed in place long enough for us to crawl the bike to a conveniently located tyre centre down the road. The tyre guy had the wheel off and tube out in less time than it would've taken for us to get the toolkit out. He pointed out that the nail actually hadn't punctured the tube, which led to a closer inspection of the bike. It turned out that the wheel had some dangerously loose spokes, of which one had pierced the tube, and in the process we worked out that the front brake was binding, so we made for a more well equipped workshop and they had everything sorted in a few hours. We were in Bled before we knew it!
